Stalking in Scotland - General Information
On every outing you will be accompanied at all times by qualified stalkers.
We have butchering and vacuum packing facilities here at Woodmill and venison can be taken home on request.
Terrain
The land we stalk over is varied, from highland hill to sea level farmland with most areas covering 1000-2000 acres. The majority of this land is within 30 minutes drive, with the furthest just over an hour away.
Clothing/Kit
Your clothing needs to be waterproof and silent as possible.
You will need over-trousers and a hat.
Walking boots with gaiters are ideal.
Gloves should be worn to hide white hands but must be thin enough to feel the trigger.
A good pair of binoculars (6x40 or 10x40).
Rifles
Woodmill stalkers all use .243 rifles which are available for your use, but obviously only when accompanied by the owner. We have a rifle range next to the house that you can use and practise on at will. (See Firearms)
Accommodation
Woodmill is a large house in the countryside (see the Accommodation page of the website). We cater for guests staying with us on a dinner-bed & breakfast basis, with all drinks and a help-yourself bar included. Evening meals are taken in the privacy of the drawing room which has an open log fire.
There are two comfortable double/twin bedrooms, with one en-suite shower and one bathroom.
Time of Year
The stalking seasons for roe follow one another - bucks 1st April - 20th October, and does 21st October - 31st March. (See Holiday Packages)
July, August and September are difficult times of year to stalk because the vegetation is high and roe deer are relatively small (often not much bigger than a large labrador dog). December through to the end of May is an ideal period: my personal favourite is October/November as Scotland can look its best then with early frosts adding to the atmosphere.
Confirmation and Payment
Confirmation of your holiday is by way of a deposit and only on receipt of this money is the booking secured.
Deposit is based on 30% of holiday cost.
Balance is paid 8 weeks before arrival.
Payment in GBP.
We do not offer refunds due to the nature of time to organise a holiday like this (for another guest to fill in) and the potential loss of income from a strictly seasonal business – please ensure that you have suitable holiday insurance.
Finally ...
Here at Woodmill Shootings we have a total passion for deer, whether it be stalking or simply observing them. Effective management of the roe deer population is therefore uppermost at all times and as a result we always see plenty of healthy animals whenever we go out.
Whenever we get the opportunity to introduce new people to stalking it is with a sense of great excitement - and please be warned, it can be addictive!
